Despite his many legal troubles throughout his life, Sand’s legacy inspires new generations of young people to embrace alternative lifestyles and seek self-improvement through consciousness-expanding substances. Aside from his involvement in the drug culture, Sand was outspoken against war and advocated for personal freedom and individual rights. Sand’s lawyer found a way for him to return to America with credit for time served in a Canadian jail. By 1995, Sand had set up a lab in Port Coquitlam near Vancouver to produce LSD, DMT, MDMA, and MDA on a large scale.
It is well worth a viewing if you are interested in drug culture, the 1960's, psychedelia and 20th Century American history. This 2015 documentary chronicles the life and times of two men, Nicholas Sand and Tim Scully, who together set in motion the psychedelic revolution of the late 1960's. A year later Scully set up a third lab with the late Nick Sand, another celebrated clandestine chemist who is credited as the first underground chemist on record to have synthesized DMT—another amazing psychedelic material.

Unlike the rat and guinea pig the glucuronic acid conjugates of 13- and 14-hydroxy-LSD were only present in small amounts. In the rat and guinea pig the major metabolites were the glucuronic acid conjugates of 13- and 14-hydroxy-LSD which were found in both urine and bile. The metabolites identified were 13- and 14-hydroxy-LSD and their glucuronic acid conjugates, 2-oxo-LSD, de-ethyl LSD and a naphthostyril derivative. The reaction was quenched at various time points, and the aliquots were extracted using liquid partitioning and analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Phase I drug metabolism was investigated by incubating human liver microsomes and cryopreserved human hepatocytes with LSD. Previous studies have demonstrated that O-H-LSD is present in human urine at concentrations times greater than LSD, the parent compound.

Most people won’t be able to tell the difference between them. Most of the lysergamides share the same general set of effects and have comparable potency and safety profiles. However, because of the similarities in effects, the high safety profile of ALD-52, and a tendency for providing a smoother experience, this is rarely viewed as a bad thing. Most of the physiological changes occur as a byproduct of the cognitive effects. The effects of these compounds are virtually exclusive to the mind. Overall, ALD-52 has a very low risk of causing any major physical side effects.
The Future Of Psychedelics
By May 1969, at their laboratory in Windsor, California, Nick Sand; his pregnant partner, Jill Henry; Tim Scully; and David Mantell had produced over a kilogram of LSD, enough for more than 4 million 300 μg doses. His story is told in the documentary “The Sunshine Makers.” Sands and a partner flooded San Francisco in the late 1960s with millions of hits of acid before they were arrested.

There is a lot that healthy people could do with psychedelics if done responsibly. There were more people taking bad drugs, more people behaving badly. In 1970, a cargo plane flew over 25,000 people at a rock concert and dropped thousands of acid tabs to the cheering crowd below. ALD-52 was clinically studied and found to produce psychedelic effects similar to those of LSD itself and to closely match the time–course of LSD in terms of onset and duration.

These LSD prodrugs were developed by Lizard Labs and emerged as novel designer drugs starting in the mid-2010s. It is a key parent compound of the 1-acyllysergamide LSD prodrugs and served as inspiration for development of subsequent compounds of this series such as 1P-LSD, 1V-LSD, and 1cP-LSD, among many others. An early study reported that ALD-52 surprisingly did not produce the head-twitch response, a behavioral proxy of psychedelic effects, in mice. ALD-52 is a readily converted prodrug of LSD and hence has similar pharmacology to LSD.
- Sand became a professional psychedelic guide (trip sitter), helping facilitate DMT and mescaline experiences, for which he became widely respected.
- ALD-52 itself was first definitely encountered as a novel designer drug in Europe in 2016.
- Ronald Stark was operating a secret laboratory in Paris, with the British scientist, Richard Kemp, as his chief chemist.
- While in college, Sand came across literature about psychedelic substances and met with intellectuals who used them as a tool for personal growth.
Colourful History Of 'truth Drug' That Bent Millions Of Minds
Owsley, impressed with Scully’s technical abilities, not only took him on as a lab apprentice, but hired him to be a soundman for the Grateful Dead. Prior to his first acid trip, Scully had been an electronics prodigy—he’d made a particle accelerator in high school—but he put his aspiring career on the back burner to apprentice with a curious man named Owsley Stanley. “Millbrook was more of an intellectual scene,” the director Feilding Mellen told me when I recently spoke to him over the phone, “that practiced a more structured approach to psychedelic use.” The drug was even spoofed in an early SNL bit with Dan Aykroyd playing Jimmy Carter giving advice to a tripping teen. But the proliferation of LSD in the late 60s owes much to the labor of the two Americans. Acid made me want to devote myself to my life, but when chemists Nick Sand and Tim Scully first took it it made them want to devote their lives to the drug.

But I was no longer convinced that just making a lot of LSD available was suddenly going to cause everybody to have the same kind of experience I did. Why did you change your opinion that acid could change the world? In April 1965, Don and I set out to make a lot of acid.

I’m glad that the film makes our story accessible to everyone, so they can have some sense of what we were up to. How does it feel to see your life history play out in the film? But looking at what could be done with people who have medical issues is really big. There’s an increasing amount of research that suggests that LSD could be developed as a clinical drug to alleviate anxiety and addiction. He had a lab in Canada where the RCMP made a film that was included in the movie.

Decades later, not only had members of the Brotherhood passed away and served time in prison, their real story was still hard to come by. In the 1950s, the CIA began researching LSD in a secret program known as MKUltra, which involved agents testing the substance on different kinds of people, usually without their knowledge of being drugged. While the popular vote enables cannabis legalization in several new states and brings political legitimacy to medicinal marijuana and the cannabis business industry, other drugs with potentially therapeutic value continue to be blacklisted. Sand set up his new lab downtown and eventually was busted near St. Louis and the jig was up…the psychedelic revolution hit a major snag with the arrest…right in our own backyard.
Tim Scully is a legend in the psychedelic community, and without him, hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people would not have been exposed to the mind-opening experiences LSD provides. He also believes that there may be a paranormal aspect to psychedelics, although he readily admits this is hard to prove concretely. He describes group acid trips where everyone present felt as if they were parts of a larger whole and says that these experiences shaped his view on psychedelics and life. Scully believes that psychedelics offer a window into a deeper reality, revealing connections between people, nature, and the universe.
